3 Pieces of Advice For Men to Live Well
3 Pieces of Advice For Men to Live Well
My name is Mathew Rettig, a medical doctor, specifically a medical oncologist.
So, the best thing that you can do to prevent prostate cancer is to lead a healthy life, to stay lean, just to exercise. What I like to say is if it’s good for your heart, it’s good for your prostate cancer, it’s good to prevent it and it’s actually helpful to manage it once it’s already developed. You can eat fruit. The reason why fruit is okay even though it has sugar is that it’s a fiber so it gets absorbed slowly. Try to avoid lots and lots of red meat. I’m not saying avoid all these things. You have to live life and enjoy things but a nice balance to eat vegetables, the things that are common sense. There’s no rocket science to this. Eat those things that if it keeps you lean and if it keeps you lean and keeps your heart healthy you’ll be limiting your risk for prostate cancer and other cancers in general so that’s the first.
Two is to exercise, okay. It can help with your risk and it can also help if you have cancer, to deal with the cancer and to tolerate treatment.
And three is to have a support structure, a social support structure. We know that men who have that kind of support do better and that’s really critical. And, of course, I would also add go to your doctor. Make sure that you have regular follow-ups and checkups.
Make sure you get appropriate screening for you and that’s a blood test called a
PSA and that can be done typically when men are about 50 but that’s
individualized based upon the patient’s history and family history of cancer. So there are different recommendations for the specific screening tests that are used for prostate cancer and you should talk to your primary care physician in order to make that best decision for you.
